Last night, for the first time in a long time, I listened to a live performance from a band that used to rule just about everything in my life. Over the past several days I’ve also been binging on one of my all-time favorite TV shows in an effort to beat out the date Netflix is pulling it from it’s streaming service. A race against time to relive the past.
Ahh, new years day. I love this day. I love the yearly exercise that whips up nostalgic mental gymnastics with bits of sunny prognostication peppered throughout to sweeten the sauce. New Year, new you, hope and change…and I’m all for it. “It’s time to toss away stuff you won’t need in the end…but keep what’s important, and know who’s your friend.”
Certain comforts are timeless. True passions are like old friends. Sure, you can drift apart here and there, but when you reunite…well, it’s as if no time has passed at all. And this time you spend together right here and now is just as powerfully therapeutic and filled with magic as it ever was way back when.
And so, it’s time. “Time to cast away stones, and time to gather stones together.” Here’s to all my old shmaltzy platitudes. To quiet reflection and nervous enthusiasm. To the crippling hope that Trump and Kim Jong-un will knock it the hell off.
Here’s to me finding the way toward a much better me…and to all of you in finding a way to reunite with all your distant traveling loves, if for only a brief moment in time.
Here’s to 2018 and to each and every one of you.
